Internships

Internships

American Indian Studies requires internships of all Masters of Arts  and BA mjor candidates, and strongly recommends it for all Ph.D. students and undergraduate pursung minors. Internships offer students a chance to become directly involved in tribal interests and issues for a semester and give tribes and communities the opportunity to have a student make a professional and scholarly contribution in an area of expressed need. internships also provide students with an opportunity to work with instituitons whose purposes is to work with Native American communities. The purpose of an internship is to provide students with hands-on, day-to-day work experience that is directly related to academic interests. AIS faculty believe that most interns learn as much outside the classroom as they do in the classroom. Internships some identify post-graduation employment opportunities during their internship experience.

American Indian Studies has a structured internship application process; students are responsible for finding their internship sites within various tribal governments, organizations both on and off-campus, or related agencies. This listing offered below is intended to help students identify a potential internship site, but is not intended to be exhaustive. If you wish to propose an alternative site, by all means do so!

Students may enroll for internships during Fall or Spring semesters or during the summer sessions. Internships may be paid or unpaid.

All necessary forms are available at this link: AIS Internship Forms http://www.ais.arizona.edu/student-resources/forms.

Following is a list of programs and agencies that have expressed a desire for interns. You are not limited to this list, however.

First Alaskans Institute Summer Internship

The Summer Internship Program (SIP) places Alaska Native, Native American, Indigenous and rural undergraduate/graduate students into organizations around Alaska to provide further leadership growth, employment experience and cultural exploration.

We aim to develop leaders that understand their own histories and traditions, bringing awareness of current and emerging issues, and to provide practical experiences for them to draw from. We have the expectation of encouraging leaders who contribute to the Native community by participating in boards and commissions, service projects, networking with community leaders and engaging in the decision making process for issues that are crucial to the advancement of Alaska Natives.
